Reducing disease stigma among Egyptian medical society: SMC analytical Framework studying Facebook hashtag #Together_Against_Stigma

Abstract

Egyptian faculties of medicine students and alumni are invited to fight disease stigma by creating awareness multimedia under Facebook Hashtag #Together_Against_Stigma. The Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace (SCORP) engages Egyptian medical students’ and medical workers in a social bond by creating a bridge of awareness social network under one message “reduce stigma” to link the medical society in a social-media capital centered value chain. SCORP international call for medicine community in Egypt and the knowledgeable activity on social media platforms specially Facebook; raised a social and media concern for research in the field of disease stigma.  

This paper is socially analyzing impact of social-media content in reducing disease stigma and promoting the area of health equity among Egyptian university medical students’ associations; in which Social-Media Capital (SMC) framework is used to examine medical society (students, alumni, worker) members’ insight change towards their patients, when they get exposed to Facebook multimedia pieces (videos, info graphics, photos) under Hashtag #Together_Against_Stigma. In addition to applying social network analysis (SNA) methodology to study Facebook posts’ engagement rates and its effect on SMC mediators.  

The study concluded that SMC has a significant role in strengthening up the relationship between doctors themselves regarding accepting each other’s differences and prospective, as well as establishment of tolerant bridges among the practitioners and their future patients.
