Media research throughout the years has stated and proven the underrepresentation of women in media content, or portrayed women in stereotypical roles such as caregivers, spoiled individuals or dependent characters. However, a notable shift in gender role representation has been identified by media scholars, particularly after the emergence of streaming platforms across different countries. This shift aligns with the fourth wave of feminism and the global adoption and worldwide implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); specifically goal 5, which advocates for gender equality. In this context, a systematic review was conducted to assess the gender role represented in content streamed on SVOD platforms; assessing the stereotypical and counter- stereotypical gender roles as being represented in streamed drama and the research found in most of the recent studies that the new produced content is more likely to break the stereotypes and change the taboos to be familiar to the new generations.
